Learn to Improvise

The ability to play well with other musicians without a prior rehearsal is an imperative skill in the real world of working musicians. In this video, Garet improvises a drum part to a song he’d never heard prior to the recording of this video. In working with Garet, you’ll learn how to listen to what’s going on around you musically and build on your ability to play the drums in a way that compliments the other instruments making for a more powerful overall expression.

FAQ’s

What if I don’t have a drum set?

Don’t worry! I’ve got two professional drum kits set up in my studio where we’ll be working together. It’s not important to have a drum kit when just starting out, and I actually encourage students to hold off on buying one until they’re hand technique is at a solid level. Once you’re ready for a drum kit, I’ll assist you in finding a good drum kit at a reasonable price. There’s a lot to look out for but I’ll be with you at every step of the way.

Is it possible to change my drum lesson date?

Yes you can change your recurring lesson date if there’s a change in your schedule or if you’re just needing to reschedule due to a last minute change in plans.

Tell me more about your cancellation policy.

Once accepted as a student, there’s a commitment to lessons. Cancellations within a month of the lesson will still need to be paid, however I’ll do my best to reschedule you for the time you missed. Cancellations with more than a month’s notice are not required to be paid.

How does the billing process work?

Billing is always on the first of the month and depending on the length of the month and how many lessons will fall in that month the bill will slightly change. For example if there are 4 (hour long) lessons in the month it’d add up to $320. If there are 5 (hour long) lesson days in the month it’d be $400.

How long will it take for me to play the drum kit?

This heavily depends on the students own ability and their dedication to practicing outside of private lessons. I’ve had students work on basic technique for months, and others for a few weeks. It’s important to understand good hand technique before moving to the drum kit. Otherwise you’ll lack the technical ability to progress at a high level. On average most of my beginner students work with just a drum pad for the first 1-3 months of lessons.

Can you teach two students at once?

I can teach two students at the same time but this isn’t recommended. The price will be the same for each student and each student will most likely be excelling at different rates. The amount of time each student gets on the instrument, and the level of attention each student gets will be cut in half. It’s best for each student to receive their own private lessons. If your budget and time is of concern the best way to address this is by having the students take back-to-back half hour long lessons. If scheduling is the sole concern, we’ll do our best to schedule back-to-back hour long lessons. Hour long weekly lessons are recommended for students who want to see the most growth on the drum set.
